Malaysia Human Development Index (MHDI)

Overview

INTRODUCTION

 

The Malaysia Human Development Index (MHDI) is an index developed by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) to evaluate the level of human development, which is the main criteria in measuring the progress of a country aside from economic aspects. MHDI comprises three dimensions namely long and healthy life; access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

 

PERFORMANCE OF MHDI

 

The performance of the MHDI score in 2024 was at a very high level of development with a score of 0.826. An analysis by dimension index showed that the highest index score recorded in 2024 was the Gross National Income (GNI) Index with a score of 0.890 (2023: 0.885), followed by the Life Expectancy Index with a score of 0.838 (2023: 0.825) and the Education Index with a score of 0.755 (2023: 0.754). The GNI Index and the Life Expectancy Index were at a very high level of development, while the Education Index was at a high level of development.

PERFORMANCE OF MHDI BY STATE

 

Nine states were classified as having a very high level of development in 2024 namely W.P. Kuala Lumpur which recorded the highest score of 0.899, followed by Selangor (0.856), Pulau Pinang (0.849), W.P. Labuan (0.847), Melaka (0.829), Negeri Sembilan (0.825), Sarawak (0.821), Johor (0.811) and Pahang (0.808). Six other states were categorised under the high level of development namely Perak (0.798), Terengganu (0.793), Perlis (0.781), Kedah (0.778), Sabah (0.767) and Kelantan (0.763).
