DOSM Representative:
Ms. Siti Faizah Hanim Md Matar, Principal Assistant Director, Price, Income and Expenditure Statistics Division

Take home-points:

Knowledge of the compilation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) that reflects international standards and best practices as described in the 2020 CPI Manual was sought to be improved.

An overview of the methods and practices that National Statistical Offices (NSOs) should consider when making decisions on how to deal with the various problems in the compilation of a CPI was provided by the manual.

The main uses of the CPI were to measure inflation, provide adjustment factors for the indexation of prices, wages, and other payments, and to be used as a deflation of series in nominal terms to derive "real" terms.

CPIs are now considered one of the most important economic and social indicators produced by NSOs throughout the world.
