Monthly Manufacturing Statistics Malaysia March 2013 (Updated: 09/05/2013)


PERFORMANCE IN MARCH 2013


1. SALES VALUE

The sales value of Manufacturing sector in March 2013 declined by 7.5% (RM4.2 billion) to record RM51.1 billion as compared to RM55.3 billion reported a year ago. Meanwhile, month-on-month basis, the sales value has increased by 10.3% (RM4.8 billion) as compared with the preceding month. The sales value in February 2013 has been revised negative 6.6% year-on-year to record RM46.3 billion.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month, the sales value in March 2013 increased by 12.3% as compared with the preceding month.

The year-on-year depreciation in the sales value in March 2013 was attributed to the lower sales in 57 of 116 industries (49.1%) surveyed. Meanwhile, the sales value has increased month-on-month due to the increases in 106 of 116 industries (91.4%). Table 1 and 2 show the percentage change in sales value for the five (5) major industries.


2. NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES

Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in March 2013 was 1,039,596 persons, an increase of 0.7% compared with the preceding month. Meanwhile, year-on-year basis, the number of employees increased by 1.1%, or 11,555 persons as compared to 1,028,041 persons in March 2012. The total employees in February 2013 has been revised positive 0.3% year-on-year to record 1,032,137 persons.


3. SALARIES & WAGES

Month-on-month basis, salaries & wages paid in March 2013 increased by 7.9% (RM209.8 million) to register RM2,851.0 million. Meanwhile, the total amount paid in March 2013, has increased by 8.3% (RM219.5 million) as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid in February 2013 has been revised positive 7.3% year-on-year to record RM2,641.2 million.


4. AVERAGE SALARIES & WAGES PER EMPLOYEE

Month-on-month basis, average salaries & wages per employee in March 2013 increased by 7.2% to register RM2,742. Meanwhile, average salaries & wages paid per employee in March 2013 has also increased by 7.1% as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Average salaries & wages paid per employee in February 2013 has been revised to positive 7.3% year-on-year to record RM2,559.


5. PRODUCTIVITY

Month-on-month basis, average sales value per employee or productivity in March 2013 increased by 9.5% to register RM49,143. Productivity in March 2013 has decreased by 8.6% as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Productivity in February 2013 has been revised to negative 6.8% year-on-year to record RM44,874.


PERFORMANCE IN THE PERIOD JANUARY – MARCH 2013

During January – March 2013, the sales value of the Manufacturing sector declined by 3.8% (RM5.9 billion) to register RM147.7 billion as shown in Table 3. The number of employees engaged during the period, increased by 1.1% (11,555 persons) to register 1,039,596 persons. Cumulatively, productivity or average sales value per employee in this period decreased by 4.9% to record RM142,073.
