Monthly Manufacturing Statistics Malaysia December 2012 (Updated: 08/02/2013)

PERFORMANCE IN DECEMBER 2012

1. SALES VALUE

The sales value of the Manufacturing sector in December 2012 posted a growth of 6.0% (RM2.9 billion) to record RM51.9 billion as compared to RM48.9 billion reported a year ago. Meanwhile, month-on-month basis, the sales value also increased by 1.9% (RM0.9 billion) as compared with the preceding month. The sales value in November 2012 has been revised positive 7.1% year-on-year to record RM50.9 billion.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month, the sales value in December 2012 decreased by 1.7% as compared with the preceding month.

The year-on-year improvement in the sales value during the current month as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year was attributed to the higher sales in 59 of 116 industries (50.9%) surveyed. Meanwhile, the sales value also rose month-on-month due to the increases in 56 of 116 industries (48.3%). Table 1 and 2 show the percentage change in sales value for the five (5) major industries.

2. NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES

Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in December 2012 was 1,020,265 persons, a decrease of 1,166 persons or 0.1% compared with the preceding month. Meanwhile, year-on-year basis, the number of employees increased by 1.6%, or 16,339 persons as compared to 1,003,926 persons in December 2011. The total employees in November 2012 has been revised positive 1.4% year-on-year to record 1,021,431 persons.

3. SALARIES & WAGES

Month-on-month basis, salaries & wages paid in December 2012 increased by 6.9% (RM178.6 million) to register RM2,760.3 million. Meanwhile, the total amount paid in December 2012, also has increased by 6.1% (RM157.9 million) as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid in November 2012 has been revised positive 9.8% year-on-year to record RM2,581.7 million.

4. AVERAGE SALARIES & WAGES PER EMPLOYEE

Month-on-month basis, average salaries & wages per employee in December 2012 increased by 7.0% to register RM2,705. Average salaries & wages paid per employee in December 2012, also has increased by 4.4% as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Average salaries & wages paid per employee in November 2012 has been revised to positive 8.3% year-on-year to record RM2,528.

5. PRODUCTIVITY

Month-on-month basis, average sales value per employee or productivity in December 2012 increased by 2.0% to register RM50,834. Meanwhile, productivity in December 2012, has increased by 4.3% as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year. Productivity in November 2012 has been revised to positive 5.6% year-on-year to record RM49,847.

PERFORMANCE IN THE PERIOD JANUARY – DECEMBER 2012

During January – December 2012, the sales value of the Manufacturing sector posted a growth of 5.5% (RM32.2 billion) to register RM622.3 billion as shown in Table 3. The number of employees engaged during the period, also increased by 1.6% (16,339 persons) to register 1,020,265 persons. Cumulatively, productivity or average sales value per employee in this period increased by 3.8% to record RM609,986.
