| The Consumer Price Index (CPI) Malaysia measures the percentage change through time in the cost of purchasing a constant basket of goods and services which represents the expenditure pattern of all households in Malaysia in a specified time period. It is calculated based on the international standard and procedures; known as the Laspeyres formula. The index which is expressed in terms of 2010 = 100 is a composite index, weighted by regional expenditure weights, of three regional indices computed separately for Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. | ||||
| The Producer Price Index (PPI) publication is compiled and published each month for the main Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification (M.S.I.C) 2000 categories for locally produced goods and the Standard International Trade Classification (S.I.T.C) for imported goods. The PPI is released to the general public on the last working day of the month following the reference month. The PPI is designed to measure the changes in the price of commodities charged by domestic producers and those paid by importers for importing goods into Malaysia. The PPI constitutes local production and import price indices. The PPI measures the average change in the prices charged by producers for goods of an industry in a reference month compared with that of the base period. As of reference month January 2010, PPI for Domestic Economy, Local Production and Imports are published using a new base year, 2005=100. A wide collection of commodities are selected to represent the various sectors of the economy and prices for these commodities are collected on a monthly basis. A total of 630 commodity items are used in the compilation of the local production price index, while 1,086 commodity items are used in the import price index. | ||||

The prices for steel bars, cement and fabric reinforcement published in this Special Release 1 are obtained from the price collection conducted by Department of Statistics, Malaysia. Prices are reported according to 3 regions in Peninsular Malaysia as follows:- North = Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang and Perak The price of the bitumen 80/100 penetration is based on the average ex-Kuala Lumpur price quoted to contractors by the main suppliers. It is designated to measure the average rate of change in prices of selected building materials utilized in eight categories of building in six regions of Peninsular Malaysia. The BCI is relevant only for application of the Price Variation Clause in government building contracts. The specifications and weightage pattern for selected building materials by category of building are determined by JKR. Approximately 3200 price quotations are collected monthly from about 545 outlets for 164 selected building material items. | ||||

The BCI is relevant only for application of the Price Variation Clause in government building contracts. The specifications and weightage pattern for selected building materials by category of building are determined by JKR. Approximately 1700 price quotations are collected monthly for 175 selected building material items. | ||||

| Starting from January 2013, the Component Cost Index of the Mechanical and Electrical Works is based on the revised base year which has been changed from (December 2007) to (July 2012=100). The unit price indices are reported according to three (3) regions, that is Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. The specifications of the selected mechanical and electrical components are determined by Public Works Department (JKR) and Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB). The prices are obtained from the price collection conducted by Department of Statistics, Malaysia. | ||||
