MALAYSIA ECONOMIC INDICATORS : LEADING, COINCIDENT & LAGGING INDICES

No. of pages

23

PriceRM5.00

This report is published monthly beginning from the first release of the data for November 2000. The System of Economic Indicators is designed to signal impending changes in the direction of overall economic activity and help analyze the short-term prospect of the economy. The system currently adopted by the Department of Statistics incorporates a set of coincident, leading and lagging indices.

The Coincident Index serves as a proxy indicator for the aggregate economic activity of the country.

The Leading Index provides early signal on the direction in which the economy is going. The Leading Index consists of different economic series which consistently lead the Coincident Index by several months. The Lagging Index, on the other hand, serves to confirm what had happened to the economy. This index measures the performance of cyclical movements by the leading and coincident indices. All time series used for the compilation of the indices are seasonally adjusted to smooth out variation within month due to the different number of working days or trading-days in each month. For the composite leading indicators, the seasonally adjusted series is further subjected to smoothing for better judgment of the course the economy is likely to take.
