The Industrial Production Index (IPI) in May 2010 increased 12.5% as compared with May 2009. Meanwhile, the IPI in April 2010 was revised 10.7% year-on-year. The increase in May 2010 was due to the increases in the two indices: Manufacturing (18.7%) and Electricity (11.5%). However, the index of Mining posted a decrease of 0.2%.

Month-on-month, the IPI increased 3.3%. The cumulative index for the period of January-May 2010 increased 11.3% as compared with the same period of 2009.



2. PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING SECTOR

The Manufacturing output in May 2010 increased 18.7% as against May 2009. Output for April 2010 increased by 15.1% (revised) as compared with the same month of 2009. As compared with the preceding month, the output for May 2010 increased 3.8%. The growth for the first five months of 2010 increased by 16.0% as compared with the same period of last year.

The increase in the Manufacturing output in May 2010 was due to increases in the groups: Electrical and Electronics Products (33.4%); Non-metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal and Fabricated Metal Products (29.1%); and Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (11.5%).


3. PERFORMANCE OF MINING SECTOR

The output for the Mining sector decreased marginally 0.2% in May 2010 as compared with the same month of 2009. This was due to the decrease in crude oil index (1.9%). However, natural gas index increased by 4.0%. As compared with the preceding month, the Mining output increased to 2.4%. For the first five months of 2010, the Mining sector recorded an increase of 0.6% as compared with the same period of last year.


4. PERFORMANCE OF ELECTRICITY SECTOR

The Electricity output increased 11.5% in May 2010 as compared with the same month a year earlier. As compared with the preceding month, the Electricity output posted an increase of 3.3%. An increase of 15.8% was registered in the period of January-May 2010 as compared with the corresponding period of 2009.
