The functions of the Department of Statistics Malaysia are to collect, interpret and disseminate statistics. In performing these functions, the Department faces many challenges in contributing towards the formation of an information society through the dissemination of information.

In popularising the concept of information or knowledge society, the Department has upgraded its information technology capacity to enable the provision of statistics to users, be it government, private or those outside the country. A knowledge society is a literate and knowledgeable society. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the Department gauges its own environment with the expansion of the usage of information technology.

The usage of information technology is particularly pervasive in the service sector such as ours. It is essential to handle the voluminous data involved in providing the service. Therefore a timely system of dissemination of information is very much required in meeting the Department’s Mission and the Client’s Charter. Hence our products and services as well as key data which are useful in planning for development activities and for research purposes are thus posted on this website. Statistics provided are continuously updated as and when new data are made available.

In line with the plan that all government agencies function in the electronic government environment, the Department's website provides a link direct to the myGovernment Portal. Links can also be made through this website to international statistical organisations, world wide national statistical offices, as well as to the Special Data Dissemination Standards (SDDS) site. Information and news for publicity of current surveys undertaken by the Department of Statistics is disseminated through the internet, on the Department's website.

In adherence to the guideline for the website to be maintained by both technical and content team, membership of the Committee on Coordination and Maintenance of the Department of Statistics' Homepage was drawn from various Divisions of the Department as shown in the Organisation Structure for Development of Information Technology for the Department.
