Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by State, 2007 (Updated: 17/02/2010)


MAIN FINDINGS
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCTS BY STATE, 2007

1. Selangor was the main share contributor to the national Gross Domestic Products (GDP) in 2007 with 21.5 per cent, followed by WP Kuala Lumpur (13.8 per cent), Sarawak (9.6 per cent), Johor (9.5 per cent) and Pulau Pinang (8.8 per cent). In total, contribution by these five states were 63.2 per cent.

2. The highest growth of GDP in 2007 was recorded by the WP Kuala Lumpur at 9.0 per cent, followed by Selangor (7.6 per cent). Pulau Pinang posted a growth of 6.6 per cent in 2007 due to lower demand on Electrical & Electronic products in the external market. These states were among those posted growth higher than the national growth (6.2 per cent). Other states recorded higher growth than the national level were Kedah (8.7 per cent), Kelantan (7.5 per cent), Sarawak, Terengganu and Perlis recorded 6.5 per cent respectively and Melaka (6.3 percent).

3. The value of national GDP for year 2007 was mainly contributed by Services sector with 53.7 per cent share, followed by Manufacturing sector (30.1 per cent). It is observed that the Services sector was the main contributor to the GDP of WP Kuala Lumpur (88.9 per cent), Kelantan (72.0 per cent), WP Labuan (67.0 per cent) and Perak (63.4 per cent), which registered more than the national level (53.7 per cent).

4. The contribution of Manufacturing sector was significant for Pulau Pinang (54.8 per cent), Melaka (49.2 per cent) and Negeri Sembilan (52.2 per cent). Special features on the economic structure of Pulau Pinang were led by Manufacturing sector (54.8 per cent) and Services sector (41.1 per cent) with combination of both exceeds 95.0 per cent GDP for the state.

5. From sector point of view, both WP Kuala Lumpur and Selangor recorded the highest Services sector in Malaysia, valued at RM122,168 million or 46.9 per cent of share. This is in line with their position as a major national trading and administration centre of various services activities such as Financial, Government, Transport & Communications and Business Services related activities. As an entry and exit point for the international trade and travels, Johor and Pulau Pinang were amongst the contributors in Services sector mainly in transportation subsector. On the other hand, Services sector in Perak was strongly supported by Utilities subsector.

6. In Manufacturing sector, Selangor was the highest contributor, followed by Pulau Pinang and Johor. The shares of these states were 55.8 per cent from the overall value added. The Motor Vehicles & Transport Equipment and Electrical & Electronic subsectors were the main contributors to the growth of Manufacturing sector in Selangor. Meanwhile, Electrical & Electronic and Manufacture of Office, Accounting & Computing Machinery subsectors were dominated in Johor and Pulau Pinang.

7. Agriculture activities were strongly supported by Sabah and Sarawak with contributions of 21.2 per cent and 19.8 per cent respectively in 2007. Oil palm and Logging subsectors were the main contributors for these states. Johor, Pahang and Perak were also significant contributors with total of 32.9 per cent of the national agriculture value added.

8. Selangor was the highest contributor in Construction sector (37.6 per cent), followed by WP Kuala Lumpur (15.4 per cent) and Johor (10.2 per cent) in which all these three states contributing 63.3 per cent to the overall sector. Nevertheless, Sarawak and Pulau Pinang also contributed a significant share in this sector.
