Malaysian Economic Indicators - Leading, Coincident and Lagging Indexes June 2013 (Updated: 21/08/2013)

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance showed a decrease of 0.6% to 117.2 points in June 2013, compared with 117.9 points in the previous month. The main components that contributed to the decrease were Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (-0.5%), Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (-0.4%) and Real Imports of Semi Conductors (-0.2%). The annual change of the LI slightly decreased in June 2013 to 3.5% from 4.2% in the preceding month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, also dropped by 0.4% in June 2013. The negative change in the reference month was due to the major decline in Volume Index of Retail Trade (-0.3%) and Real Contributions to EPF (-0.2%). However, the annual change of the CI virtually unchanged in June 2013.

The annual change of the LI remained favourable albeit a lower growth as compared to the previous month. Supported by the level of Diffusion Index for both indexes above 50.0%, this implies that the Malaysian economy should continue to expand in the months ahead.

(The complete indicators on Leading, Coincident and Lagging Indexes are shown in the following Table 4).
