Malaysian Economic Indicators - Leading, Coincident and Lagging Indexes April 2013 (Updated: 21/06/2013)

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance increased in April 2013. The LI rose by 0.8% to 117.4 points from 116.5 points recorded in the previous month. Two main components that accounted for the increase were Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (0.4%) and Number of New Companies Registered (0.3%). The annual change of the LI in the reference month also increased to 3.9% as against 3.0% in the previous month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, virtually unchanged in April 2013. The increase of two components of CI namely Real Contributions to EPF (0.2%) and Industrial Production Index (0.1%) were offset by the decrease in Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector (-0.2%) and Volume Index of Retail Trade (-0.1%). The annual change of the CI recorded a growth of 2.7% compared with 2.2% in March 2013.

The annual change of the LI and CI showed an improvement in the reference month with the level of Diffusion Index for both indexes above 50.0%. This suggests that the Malaysian economy will continue to expand in the near term.
