Summary Of Monthly Rubber Statistics Malaysia March 2013 (Updated: 13/05/2013)

 

1. PRODUCTION

In March 2013, a total of 70,304 tonnes of natural rubber (NR) was produced, decreased by 5,701 tonnes (-7.5%) from February 2013. However, this month’s NR production is 2,928 tonnes (4.3%) higher compared to a year ago. The main contributor of NR was from the smallholding sector at 94.5 per cent whilst the estate sector only accounted for 5.5 per cent. The states which produce the highest NR on estates was Negeri Sembilan (20.0%), followed by Kedah (17.9%) and Pahang (16.8%).

 

2. EXPORTS

In March 2013, a total of 73,805 tonnes of NR was exported overseas. Month-on-month and year-on-year comparisons shows an increase of 12,298 tonnes (+20.0%) and 3,868 tonnes (+5.5%) respectively. From the total NR exports, 95.3 per cent was contributed by the Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R.) with 52.7 per cent comprised of S.M.R. 20.

NR was mainly exported to People’s Rep. of China (45.8%), followed by Germany (13.6%), Rep. of Korea (3.5%), U.S.A. (3.4%), Islamic Rep. Of Iran (3.3%), Turkey (2.8%), Finland (2.6%) and Brazil (2.1%).

 

3. IMPORTS

In March 2013, Malaysia imported a total of 74,174 tonnes of NR. Imports decreased by 1,506 tonnes (-2.0%) from the previous month but increased by 14.4 per cent when compared to March 2012. Standard Rubber and Latex Concentrate were the main type of NR imported, at 27.6 per cent and 36.8 per cent respectively.

The main supplier of NR were Thailand (57.5%) and Viet Nam (10.3%). These two countries accounted for 67.8 per cent of the total imports of NR.

 

4. DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

Domestic consumption of NR was recorded at 37,303 tonnes in March 2013, increased by 3,716 tonnes (11.1%) from February 2013 but decreased by 1,901 tonnes (-4.8%) when compared to March 2012.

The highest consuming industry of NR was the rubber gloves industry with a total of 25,899 tonnes (69.4%), followed by rubber thread (10.5%) and tyres & tubes (6.7%). These three industries consumed more than half of the overall domestic consumption in the country with a total of 32,317 tonnes (86.6%).

 

5. STOCKS

The level of stocks at the end of March 2013 was recorded at 176,166 tonnes, dropped by 16,185 tonnes (-8.4%) from the level of stocks of the previous month. Nevertheless, this month’s level of stocks is higher than March 2012 with a total of 33,506 tonnes (+23.5%).

 

6. AVERAGE MONTHLY PRICE PER KILOGRAM

The average monthly price of latex concentrate was recorded at 613.25 sen per kilogramme in March 2013. Month-on-month comparison shows a reduction of 2.01 sen (-0.3%) whereas for year-on-year the price dropped 169.66 sen (-21.7%).

The average monthly price of S.M.R. 20 was recorded at 857.20 sen per kilogramme, dropped by 69.18 sen (-7.5%) from February 2013 and 263.05 sen (-23.5%) from March 2012.

 

7. EMPLOYMENT

The total number of persons engaged in rubber estates was 12,749 persons at the end of March 2013. From this total, 12,745 were paid employees with total salaries & wages amounting to RM14.5 million. The number of paid employees shrank by 0.4 per cent from the previous month but went up by 1.6 per cent from a year ago.

 

8. PRODUCTIVITY

The productivity of NR production on estates was recorded at 92.7 kilogramme per hectare in March 2013. Productivity of NR production shows a decrease when  compared  to  month-on-month at 11.0 kilogramme per hectare (-10.6%) whereas year-on-year it increased by 10.7 kilogramme per hectare (13.0%).
