Consumer Price Index Malaysia February 2013 (Updated: 20/03/2013)
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the period January to February 2013 increased by 1.4 per cent to 106.0 compared with that of 104.5 in the same period last year. Compared with the same month in 2012, the CPI for February 2013 registered an increase of 1.5 per cent from 104.5 to 106.1 and when compared with the previous month, the CPI increased by 0.2 per cent.
The index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Non-Food for the month of February 2013 showed increases of 3.3 and 0.7 per cent respectively as compared to the same month in 2012. For the period January to February 2013, the index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Non-Food increased by 2.8 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively. Compared with the previous month, the index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Non-Food increased by 0.3 and 0.1 per cent respectively (Table 1).
CPI changes for the period January - February 2013 / 2012
The 1.4 per cent increase in the CPI was brought about by increases observed in the indices of all the main groups except those of Clothing & Footwear ( - 0.8 per cent ); Communication ( - 0.7 per cent ) and Recreation Services & Culture ( - 0.1 per cent ). Notable increases among these main groups with high weights were Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages ( + 2.8 per cent ); Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels ( + 1.4 per cent ) and Transport ( + 0.4 per cent ). Other increases were Restaurants & Hotels ( + 2.1 per cent ); Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco; Health and Education by 2.0 per cent respectively; Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance ( + 1.6 per cent ) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services ( + 1.4 per cent ).

Based on the above changes and the weights assigned to the main groups, the relative contribution to the overall increase of 1.4 per cent in the CPI can be identified as shown in Table 2. The three main groups, Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages; Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels and Transport together accounted for 76.0 per cent of the overall increase recorded for the current period.

The 2.8 per cent increase in the index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages was the result of increases for Food At Home ( + 2.8 per cent ); Food Away From Home ( + 2.6 per cent ) and Coffee, Tea, Cocoa & Non-Alcoholic Beverages ( + 1.9 per cent ). Among the subgroups of Food At Home which showed significant increases during this period as shown in Table 3 were Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery ( + 5.1 per cent ); Meat ( + 4.1 per cent ); Vegetables ( + 3.7 per cent ); Fish & Seafood ( + 3.5 per cent ); Fruits ( + 2.8 per cent ); Rice, Bread and Other Cereals ( + 1.8 per cent ) and Milk & Eggs ( + 1.8 per cent ).

Monthly Changes for CPI
Compared with the previous month, the CPI for February 2013 increased by 0.2 per cent. Increases were for main groups Education ( + 0.8 per cent ); Restaurants & Hotels ( + 0.4 per cent ); Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages; Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels and Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance by 0.3 per cent respectively; Health; Communication and Recreation Services & Culture by 0.1 per cent respectively. On the other hand, decreases were for Clothing & Footwear ( - 0.3 per cent ) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services ( - 0.2 per cent ). The indices for Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco and Transport remained unchanged at 106.7 and 105.3 respectively.
The 0.3 per cent decrease in the index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages in February 2013 compared with that of the previous month was the result of increases in the index for Food At Home and Food Away From Home by 0.3 and 0.4 per cent respectively while the index for Coffee, Tea, Cocoa & Non-Alcoholic Beverages remained unchanged at 106.3.
Among the food items which recorded notable increases in February 2013 compared with the previous month were Tomatoes ( + 11.4 per cent ); Carrots ( + 5.0 per cent ); Long Beans ( + 4.8 per cent ); Cucumber ( + 4.6 per cent ); Round Scad (Fish) ( + 4.1 per cent ); Prawn ( + 3.0 per cent ); Indian Mackerel (Fish) ( + 2.4 per cent ); Cuttlefish ( + 2.3 per cent ); Black Pomfret (Fish) ( + 2.2 per cent ) and Longtail Tuna (Fish) ( + 2.2 per cent ).
Meanwhile, the index of some food items decreases in February 2013 compared with the previous month. Among these were Spinach ( - 10.4 per cent ); Choy Sum ( - 9.1 per cent ); Kai Lan ( - 8.8 per cent ); Water Spinach ( - 8.3 per cent ) and Chicken ( -2.1 per cent ).
A reclassification of items according to their durability and services rendered showed increases in Services and Non-Durable Goods by 0.4 and 0.1 per cent respectively while Durable Goods and Semi-Durable Goods decreased by 0.1 and 0.2 per cent respectively.
