TRADE PERFORMANCE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2009 AND THE PERIOD OF JANUARY- MAY 2009 Malaysia’s exports in May 2009 expanded by 4.5% to RM42.95 billion compared with April 2009. Imports decreased by 2.3% to RM32.93 billion. This has resulted in a total trade of RM75.88 billion, 1.4% higher from a month ago. A trade surplus of RM10.02 billion was recorded in May 2009, making it the 139th consecutive monthly trade surplus since November 1997. |

CURRENT ACCOUNT BALANCE For the period of January-March 2009, the current account balance of RM31.4 billion (equating to 20.2% of GDP), widened by RM1.8 billion or 6.0 % from RM29.6 billion posted in the preceding quarter. This was primarily attributed to goods (RM37.0 billion) and services (RM2.5 billion), which managed to offset the net payments on current transfers (RM4.2 billion) and income (RM3.9 billion). Malaysia Economic Indicators - Leading, Coincident And Lagging Indices April 2009 |

The Coincident Index (CI), that measures the current economic activity, rose by 0.9% in April 2009 registered at 113.7 points. The increase of the index were contributed by real gross imports (0.7%), real sales in manufacturing sector (0.4%), Index of Industrial Production (0.2%) and real contributions in EPF (0.2%). The six-month smoothed growth rate of CI in April 2009 showed an improvement to -7.1% from -9.7% in March 2009.

1. PRODUCTION Production of natural rubber (NR) in April 2009 was recorded at 55,692 tonnes, showed an increase of 17.5% (8,312 tonnes) when compared to March 2009. Year-on-year, production recorded a decrease of 24.4%. The smallholding sector contributed 94.5% of total production while the estate sector, the remaining 5.5%. |
